If you are using pulleys at work, then you can’t just be concerned about the quality and strength of your pulley wheels. You’ll also have to think about how robust your ropes are. If you are setting up a pulley system to hoist heavy objects, then you have to find the most suitable rope for your pulley system.
One type of rope you should consider is polyester. Among the many types of rope available, it’s most probable that you will find polyester the ideal material for your pulley system. This is especially true if your work is outdoors or it involves some kind of marine activity.
The advantages of polyester ropes over other ropes are:
- It is very strong. It can hold heavy loads quite well, including large boats. It only loses 10% of its breaking strength after two years of outdoor use. Other rope types, such as those made from High Modulus Polyethylene, can be overkill and it will just waste your money. A 10 mm diameter rope made of this material can have a breaking point of 10,000 kilos. The load on a rope when you hoist a 30-foot yacht may not even exceed 500 kilos.
- It is much less elastic than nylon. Nylon can elongate too much, and when you are hoisting heavy loads this can be a very big problem. Because nylon elongates and stretches, you may find your loads bouncing up in the air. Polyester eliminates this problem very well, especially when the polyester has been pre-stretched during its manufacturing process.
- Polyester is extremely resistant to sunlight and UV light. This is good news if your pulley is mainly used outdoors. For other types of material, the UV light can be very problematic.
- Polyester is much more resistant to abrasion than nylon.
Just make sure that you are buying actual polyester when you buy a rope for your pulley system, and you’ll be fine. If you’re in a store and you don’t see polyester, then it may be because it’s going by another name. In the United States polyester is sometimes called Dacron. In Germany, people may call it Trevira. In the United Kingdom it goes by the name Terylene. They’re all polyester, and you should keep that in mind when you are searching for ropes for your pulley system.
